For most of the twentieth century, popular parenting science had one bonding hormone, and it belonged to mothers. The mother’s body produced it during birth. The mother’s body kept producing it during breastfeeding. The father, the implicit theory went, was an emotional and logistical partner, useful, maybe even essential, but not contributing to the bond through any equivalent neurochemistry. Mothers bonded the biological way. Fathers bonded the social way.
Turns out, this was wrong on both counts. When researchers finally started measuring fathers, the story changed completely.
What they found was a different bonding chemistry, released through physical play and laughter. It does not run on the timeline of pregnancy and birth, and the chemical that carries the long-term father-child bond is not primarily oxytocin. It’s beta-endorphin. Which helps makes sense of why many fathers report feeling disconnected from their newborn for weeks, sometimes months -- and then, somewhere around three to six months, when the baby starts to laugh and respond to play, the bond consolidates. The delay isn’t a deficit.
There is another story running alongside this one. Each parent’s contribution runs partly through the partnership between them. The child’s body tracks both signals, separately, over years.
The developmental science missed fathers for a long time, and it missed them by design not by accident.
The attachment literature built its early evidence base almost entirely on mother-child pairs. This was partly practical -- mothers were the available research subjects, the primary caregivers in the populations most studied, and the field built its theoretical scaffolding around what it could measure. Fathers appeared occasionally as controls. Data on fathers as active participants was scarce. Data on the relationship between the two co-parenting adults was scarcer still.
The consequence was a developmental story that became a maternal story by data limitation, not by underlying biology. Generations of fathers were correctly skeptical that the research described them. It largely had not tried.
Fathers’ bodies change when they become caregivers.
A long-running study of men in the Philippines tracked testosterone levels across the transition to fatherhood. Men who became actively engaged fathers showed a drop in testosterone, and the drop was proportional to their engagement. The hormonal shift supports nurturing behavior over competition. The biology is not driving the role. It is adjusting to it.
Oxytocin adds a layer, and this is where the story gets muddled. Oxytocin is not a maternal hormone. It is a bonding hormone. Both parents make about the same amount of it. What differs is how it gets switched on. It helps to separate having oxytocin from releasing it. The capacity is there in both parents, before a pregnancy and long after. Pregnancy turns the baseline up for a while, then eases back. But a raised baseline is not the feeling. The feeling comes when something releases it. Birth and breastfeeding release it for the birthing parent. For the co-parent, the release waits on the baby becoming a partner in the exchange, the first real laugh, the held gaze, the reach. What grows is the relationship, not the level of the hormone.
Play runs on a chemistry of its own, and it works the same way. Beta-endorphin is the body’s own opioid, released by vigorous play, laughter, and physical contact. Where oxytocin produces calm and closeness, beta-endorphin produces the plain pleasure of a good time together. Like oxytocin, it runs in everyone. And the two are not rival fuels. Play releases both through the years, which is part of why play bonds so well. This is a bond any caregiver can build, because it belongs to the playing, not to the parent. It has mostly been studied in fathers, because fathers are the ones who tend to play this way, which is why the research describes a father-child bond. The mechanism does not. One honest caveat. The link between play, laughter, and the body’s opioids is well established in people generally, but its role in parent-child bonding is still mostly inferred from how fathers play, not measured directly. It is the best explanation we have, not the final word.
The clearest sign that this is about caregiving rather than gender comes from two-father families. When researchers studied gay fathers raising infants as the primary caregivers, their oxytocin levels and their caregiving behavior looked like those of primary-caregiving mothers. The hormone followed the role, not the sex of the parent. There is one honest limit here. The strong evidence so far comes from two-father families. What that does not yet settle is the mirror question. In a two-mother family, does the more play-oriented parent develop the profile once thought to be paternal? That is the study that would close the loop, and it hasn’t been done. The honest read is that the evidence points toward caregiving doing the shaping.
Which is why the timeline runs differently. Many fathers interpret the early disconnection as personal failure. It simply isn’t.
Brain imaging work comparing mothers and fathers during interaction with their own children shows the two groups activating different neural systems. Mothers show stronger activation in regions associated with care and threat-detection. Fathers show stronger activation in regions associated with social cognition, teaching, and planning. These are averages, though, and they come mostly from families where the mother is the primary caregiver. They describe a common arrangement more than fixed wiring. The two-father findings make that plain. When a father takes on the primary caregiving, the “maternal” circuitry comes online in him too. So the split between nurturing and stimulating play is not assigned by biology. It follows who does what, which every family settles in its own way, shaped by culture, circumstance, and choice. Biology then echoes those roles rather than handing them out. Most families specialize, and the science here neither prescribes nor judges that. What it does suggest is that a child benefits from both kinds of contact, nurturing and stimulating, in whatever mix and from whichever adults a family arrives at.
The other story runs through the partnership.
A study designed to test the question of culture vs. biology in parenting partnerships tracked how sensitive fathers were during play with their ten-month-old children. Then it tracked the quality of coordination between the two parenting adults across the following years. Then it drew blood from the children at age seven, measuring markers of inflammation and metabolic regulation.
The findings ran in sequence. How sensitive the father was at ten months predicted the quality of coordination between the two adults later. And the quality of that coordination predicted the children’s blood markers at age seven, even after accounting for each parent’s individual contribution. The children whose parents coordinated well had a more regulated physiology at seven partly because of what each parent did directly, and partly because of the additional signal from the coordination between them.
One honest note. This is a well-designed study in a developing literature, not a settled finding replicated across dozens of samples. What it adds is this. Even after each parent has done their own individual work, there is an additional developmental signal in whether the two adults are coordinating. That signal shows up in the child’s body in ways that each parent’s individual sensitivity alone does not fully account for.
The breakdown this creates is worth naming.
In many households, individual parenting works well, but coordination does not. Each parent has their own approach, their own strengths, their own way of reading the child. But they are either competing -- performing when the other is watching, each mildly critical of the other’s choices -- or one is withdrawing when the other takes over, ceding the field rather than staying present in it.
Neither pattern shows up in any measure of individual parenting quality. Both show up in measures of coordination.
The reframe the research suggests is a shift from a solo-performance question to a partnership question. “Am I being a good parent?” frames it as individual assessment. The coordination question is different: “Am I doing what I do well, AND supporting what my partner does well, AND staying engaged even when my partner is the one taking the lead?“ Those are three separate jobs, and the child’s body is tracking all three.
The same holds in every configuration. Two dads, two moms, a parent and a grandparent, two friends raising a child together — the individual physiology runs through whatever role each adult occupies, and the coordination runs between whoever shares the raising. The child’s body tracks both the contribution and the relationship between them, no matter the romance or biology behind it.
The cultural meaning of “connection” has usually been individual and emotional. I feel close to my child. That feeling is real and it matters. But the data say connection is at least three things happening at once.
It is a feeling. It is each adult’s own neurochemistry -- the testosterone shift, the oxytocin that warm contact releases, the beta-endorphin pathway that runs through physical play. And it is the coordination between the adults doing the raising, which registers separately in the child’s physiology over years.
The rough-and-tumble play with a five-year-old is parenting in a different sense than the bedtime story is parenting. Both matter. Both run through different neurochemistry. Both register. The conversation on Tuesday night with your co-parent is also parenting. It adds something the individual contributions do not cover. None of these is a lesser version of any other.
This is why FCD treats connection as an operating system rather than a feeling. It runs underneath conscious experience, through each adult’s own biology, and across the partnership between them. The biology was always there. The research just took a while to look for it.

Once this week, lean into physical play with your child. Wrestling, chase, lift-and-spin, whatever is age-appropriate and safe. Not for thirty seconds. Long enough that everyone is laughing. This is not bonus time. It is one of the more direct routes the research has found for the father-child bond to operate.

Once this week, ask the other adult who shows up consistently for your child what they would change about how you two parent together. Not how they parent. The coordination between you. Listen all the way through before you respond.
