At some point, quietly, a lot of us file our kid's curiosity under personality. She's my curious one. He's just not that interested in things. Before long, we start buying science kits for one child and answering questions quickly for the other. It sounds like observation. It functions like a verdict, because nobody tries to change a personality. We just route around it.
Here's the problem with the verdict. Curiosity is far more changeable than most of us think.
A pre-registered study of about 11,000 students across 134 schools in low-income districts trained teachers to do a handful of small things differently: hold a question open instead of closing it with the answer, model wondering out loud, treat a child's tangent as a lead worth following. Then the researchers measured curiosity behaviorally. Not "does your kid seem curious," but will this child give up something to get information; will they choose the science booklet when nothing is graded.
The children became measurably more curious. In other words, adults didn't discover which children were curious. They helped create the conditions that made curiosity show up. The kids retained more of what they learned, when tested a week later without warning. Their science scores rose, and the gains were still there three years later, through pandemic closures and a change of teachers. Children who merely sat near a treated classmate scored higher.
If curiosity were a trait, a handful of changed teacher moves couldn't reach it. What those moves reached is a condition. A room either has oxygen in it or it doesn't.
What actually moved
Notice what the teachers didn't do. They didn't tell children to be curious, and they didn't add content. They changed what happened at the exact moment a child's mind opened: the moment of the question.
That moment is where curiosity lives or dies, and the machinery underneath it is physical. Brain-imaging studies show that when curiosity is triggered, the brain's reward circuitry becomes more active, and memory consolidation improves for whatever arrives next. In plain English: when kids become genuinely curious, they tend to remember more of what follows. Curiosity doesn't just make learning more enjoyable. It helps learning stick. An open question is a door standing ajar; the brain leans through it. What adults control is whether the door gets held open for another moment, the pause before the answer, the "huh, I wonder why" said out loud or shut with efficiency because dinner is late and the answer is one Google search away.
There's an older observation that makes the same point from the other side. Researchers following young children found them asking on the order of 26 questions an hour at home, and 2 an hour at school. Parents often assume a curious child asks lots of questions because that's just who they are. But the same child can be a nonstop question machine in one environment and almost silent in another.
The trait story is a comfortable story
The trait story is appealing because it lets us stop wondering whether the environment matters. If curiosity is a personality feature, then the incurious kid is nobody's responsibility. If curiosity is a response to conditions, then the incurious kid is giving you information about the conditions: rooms where questions are interruptions, where wondering slows down the checklist, where being wrong costs too much to risk a guess.
That cuts against schools under test pressure, and the structural half should be said without blame: a teacher with thirty kids and a pacing guide didn't choose the incentives that make questions expensive, and the fix at that scale is a policy story, not a willpower story. But the same mechanism runs at kitchen tables, where we do hold the wheel. Every day your kid hands you a dozen openings, half of them inconvenient, most of them tangents. Each one gets fielded as an invitation or dispatched as an interruption. Neither response feels like much. Compounded over a childhood, they're the difference between a mind that keeps leaning through doors and one that learned the doors are usually shut.
One calibration, because one size never fits all. For an anxious or trauma-exposed child, curiosity has a prerequisite: safety. A child whose nervous system is busy looking for danger isn't spending much energy wondering how clouds form or why the moon is visible in the daytime. Safety comes first. The door gets opened gently: a calmer body, smaller mysteries, wonder in doses. And for the child whose questions come sideways, get repeated twenty times, or circle endlessly around one favorite topic, those are still questions. Curiosity doesn't always look broad. Sometimes it looks deep. The child who wants to tell you one more fact about elevators isn't necessarily stuck. They're inviting you into the thing that fascinates them. The child who doesn't perform curiosity in the standard way hasn't opted out of wondering.
None of this says every child is identically curious, or that you manufacture a scientist with a pause and a raised eyebrow. It says the lever you have been told is a lottery ticket is sitting in your hand.
Try This
The Question Hold
For one week, when your kid asks a question you know the answer to, don't answer it. Not at first. Hold it open for thirty seconds instead: "Oh, good question. What do you think?" Wonder along. Float a wrong guess and let them catch it. Then, if you have the answer, offer it -- or better, chase it together and let them watch you not know things.
Add one move of your own per day: wonder out loud about something ordinary, in their earshot, with no lesson attached. "I wonder why the moon is out in the daytime." You are not teaching content. You are modeling what a mind does with a gap.
Keep private count of two numbers this week: questions your kid asked you, and questions you fielded versus dispatched. The count isn't for grading yourself on a busy week (dispatching is survival, and everyone does it). The count is because most parents have never once measured the traffic through this particular door, and the volume tends to be the surprise.

Have you decided which of your kids is "the curious one"?
If you have, sit with what that label might be doing. Labels ration attention. The kid tagged curious gets his tangents followed; the kid tagged not-that-interested gets efficiency, and each treatment quietly proves its own label right. There's no failure verdict here. Sorting kids is what tired brains do. But the study above wasn't done on curious children. It was done on classrooms, and the classrooms changed. Rooms, not kids. Yours included.

I love this article -- it connects so deeply to my experience as a 5th-grade teacher. It is extremely powerful when kids (and teachers) are given the space, time, and opportunity to be curious in the classroom. Urie Bronfenbrenner, the theorist behind the Bioecological Model, was very supportive of curiosity as a matter of nurture -- that is to say, intentionally-created -- in the classroom. Under his theory, when students are exposed to an immediate environment (microsystem) that encourages and nurtures curiosity and exploration, they will become more curious and adventurous in their learning process. This can and will lead to better academic performance, such as how the students in your article achieved higher test scores. A really important read, especially in our modern-day education system which severely neglects curiosity in daily learning.
