This is the research companion to Curiosity Is a Teacher's Move, Not a Child's Trait. Read the main post first.
The main post argued that curiosity behaves less like a personality trait and more like a response to conditions adults control, and it leaned hard on one large causal study. Here's that study with its full apparatus, plus the mechanism work and the awe evidence around it. Everything causal rests on one trial in one country's schools. The rest converges on the same picture more loosely.
The $3.47 Trial
Alan, S., & Mumcu, I. (2024). Nurturing childhood curiosity to enhance learning: Evidence from a randomized pedagogical intervention. American Economic Review, 114(4), 1173-1210.

What they found: Two pre-registered cluster-randomized trials covering roughly 11,000 students in 134 low-income Turkish elementary and middle schools. Teachers were trained to field questions as invitations, model wondering, and hold information gaps open. Behavioral curiosity, children's willingness to pay for information, rose 0.109 SD, and the share declining a free science booklet fell by nearly half. Knowledge retention on a surprise one-week test rose 0.114 SD. Science scores rose 0.073 SD and were still elevated 0.073 SD three years later, through Covid closures and teacher changes. Untreated students with treated friends scored 0.170 SD higher. Girls' scientific curiosity responded most. Cost: $3.47 per pupil.
Why this matters for you: Random assignment at scale means the causal read is earned: adult moves changed children's curiosity, and the change compounded. It's the strongest single answer to "some kids just aren't curious."
What it doesn't answer: The lever tested was teacher pedagogy, not a parent script; home translation is reasoned, not measured. And the gains co-occurred with critical-thinking and uncertainty-tolerance improvements, so the curiosity channel isn't cleanly isolated from its neighbors.
What the Question Moment Does to Memory

What they found: When curiosity was piqued by a question, activity rose in the brain's dopaminergic reward circuit and hippocampus, and memory improved not only for the answer, but for unrelated material encountered while the curiosity state was active. Curiosity behaves like a door: while it's open, more of everything gets in.
Why this matters for you: This is the mechanism under the main post's "hold the question open." The pause before the answer is not a teaching trick; it is time spent inside a brain state that consolidates memory. It also explains why the tangent isn't wasted time.
What it doesn't answer: The participants were adults. Extending the mechanism to children is biologically plausible but carries developmental caveats, and this is a lab task, not a classroom or kitchen intervention.
The Awe Connection
Anderson, C. L., Dixson, D. D., Monroy, M., & Keltner, D. (2020). Are awe-prone people more curious? The relationship between dispositional awe, curiosity, and academic outcomes. Journal of Personality, 88(4), 762-779.

What they found: Across three samples (1,005 adults; 100 undergraduates with peer raters; 447 high schoolers), proneness to awe uniquely predicted curiosity (beta = .28) over and above openness and six other positive emotions, and predicted peer-rated curiosity (beta = .45) when no other positive emotion did. Through curiosity, awe connected onward to engagement and academic self-efficacy.
Why this matters for you: Awe is a supply line for curiosity. In parent terms, regular small doses of vastness, whether it’s night sky, thunderstorm, time-lapse video of a seed, feed the same appetite the question-fielding draws on.
What it doesn't answer: Cross-sectional, so direction isn't established; curious people may seek awe. It's a correlation map, not an intervention.
Awe, Systematized
Keltner, D. (2023). Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life. Penguin Press.

What it says: A synthesis of two decades of lab, diary, and field studies: awe shifts physiology toward calm and openness, quiets self-focus, and shows up reliably from brief, ordinary encounters with things like nature, music, moral beauty, the "eight wonders." A few minutes of everyday awe measurably changes state; duration matters less than quality.
Why this matters for you: It converts the awe-curiosity link into practice: awe doesn't require Yellowstone. For anxious or trauma-exposed kids, it also supplies the titration rule the main post signaled at, which is that vastness lands as wonder only inside a settled body, so dose gently.
What it doesn't answer: The causal lab work skews toward WEIRD samples, some of the trade-book numbers are looser than the framework, and threat-flavored awe can dysregulate rather than open. Cite the framework, not the precise figures.
The 26-to-2 Observation

What it says: A research synthesis built on classroom observation, documenting the gap between how much schools say they value curiosity and how rarely it's permitted expression. It carries the observation the main post quoted, young children asking around 26 questions an hour at home and about 2 at school (originally Tizard and Hughes's home/school comparison), and catalogs the modifiable adult moves: question fielding, modeled wondering, tolerance for tangents.
Why this matters for you: The 26-to-2 gap is the trait story's obituary written in field notes. Same child, different room, wildly different curiosity. It also gives you the home-court advantage plainly: the high-question environment is the one you already run.
What it doesn't answer: Observational throughout; the 26-vs-2 figure is a classic comparison cited within the synthesis, not a fresh trial. It describes the gap and plausible levers; it doesn't causally test them.
