The MIT toy study from Post 12 is the most charming piece of evidence in a quiet contrarian thread in education research. Five more studies build the case that the instruction reflex narrows what kids can actually learn.
What Guided Play Actually Is, and Why It Beats Both Alternatives

What they found: Weisberg and colleagues laid out the theoretical case for guided play as a middle ground between free play (child-led, no learning goals) and direct instruction (adult-led, prescribed content). Guided play retains the child’s agency and intrinsic motivation while channeling that activity toward specific learning goals an adult is holding in mind. The empirical claim, since borne out across vocabulary, math, spatial reasoning, and executive function, is that guided play outperforms both alternatives for most concept learning during early and middle childhood.
Why this matters for FCD: This is the framework that gives the Post 12 argument its theoretical backbone. “Set up, step back, ask” is not a casual parenting tip. It is what the developmental cognitive science says about how children learn most efficiently from adults. Most parents already do it intuitively and then second-guess themselves into direct instruction because direct instruction looks more like teaching.
What it doesn’t answer: Which specific guided-play protocols work best for which content domains. Vocabulary, math, spatial reasoning, and executive function each have somewhat different optimal scaffolding, and the field is still mapping the specifics.
Why Most “Educational” Apps Are Not Actually Educational

What they found: Hirsh-Pasek and colleagues laid out four pillars of effective learning that any educational technology should meet: active engagement, sustained attention, meaningful learning, and social interaction. They then applied the framework to a set of example apps from the educational app marketplace and argued that most “educational” apps fall short on multiple pillars, most often on social interaction (because there is no adult in the loop). Apps that mimic the guided-play structure (with an adult present, scaffolding the activity) appear to perform better than apps used alone, though the paper relies on illustrative case studies rather than a quantitative marketplace audit.
Why this matters for FCD: If you have been handing your kid an app on the theory that it is more educational than what they would otherwise be doing, this is the literature you wanted to know about. Most apps are not educational. They are screen time with a learning-flavored wrapper. The thing that makes an activity educational is not the medium. It is the adult in the room asking questions about what the kid just did.
What it doesn’t answer: Which specific apps meet the four-pillar standard. The marketplace turns over fast and Hirsh-Pasek’s framework is a tool for evaluation, not a list of approved products. The framework you can use. The product list you have to build for your own household.
A Preschool That Trained Executive Function With Play

What they found: Diamond and colleagues evaluated the Tools of the Mind curriculum, a Vygotskyan play-based preschool program that explicitly trains executive function (working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility) through structured pretend play, self-talk, and peer scaffolding. Compared to a balanced literacy curriculum, the Tools of the Mind preschoolers showed measurably stronger executive function gains at year-end. The effect was largest on the most EF-demanding tasks (the conditions in the lab where the cognitive load was highest), suggesting the curriculum was building the harder forms of self-regulation, not just the easier ones.
Why this matters for FCD: If you have read Post 12 thinking “that all sounds nice but does guided play actually scale to a classroom,” the answer is yes, with a curriculum that runs on guided-play principles. Tools of the Mind has been replicated and refined over twenty years. The mechanism the post is pointing at is not a parenting hack. It is the same engine an evidence-based preschool curriculum is running on.
What it doesn’t answer: How well the gains hold over time without sustained guided-play environments. Tools of the Mind kids who land in conventional direct-instruction kindergartens lose some of the executive-function advantage. Continuity matters.
How Many Numbers Your Kid Hears Predicts the Math They Can Do
Levine, S. C., Suriyakham, L. W., Rowe, M. L., Huttenlocher, J., & Gunderson, E. A. (2010). What counts in the development of young children’s number knowledge? Developmental Psychology, 46(5), 1309-1319.

What they found: Levine’s team recorded parent-child conversations across the toddler years and counted how many number words (one, two, three, ten, twenty) parents used in everyday context. The variation across families was enormous, from a few dozen number words per week to nearly two thousand. The number-talk count at home in the toddler years predicted the children’s cardinal-number knowledge at age four, after controlling for socioeconomic status and the overall amount of parent-and-child talk in the home.
Why this matters for FCD: This is the math version of the same point Post 12 made about the grocery store. The math your kid will know in kindergarten is being built right now in the ordinary conversations you are having about “how many cups” and “two more” and “half the size of yours.” Number talk during cooking, shopping, and play is not extra. It is the thing.
What it doesn’t answer: Whether the relationship is straightforwardly causal. Levine’s design is correlational; it is plausible that parents who use more number words also do other things that build math knowledge. The intervention research that has followed (training parents to use more number talk) does show causal effects, but the size of those effects is more modest than the correlational data suggests.
Circle-Time Games That Move Self-Regulation
Tominey, S. L., & McClelland, M. M. (2011). Red Light, Purple Light: Findings from a randomized trial using circle time games to improve behavioral self-regulation in preschool. Early Education and Development, 22(3), 489-519.

What they found: Tominey and McClelland ran a randomized trial of a brief circle-time games intervention in preschool classrooms. The games (variations on Red Light Green Light and Simon Says) explicitly trained the executive-function components of behavioral self-regulation (attention, working memory, inhibitory control) through a play-based structure. Eight weeks of twice-weekly games did not produce a statistically significant self-regulation effect for the full sample, but post hoc analyses found significant gains for the subgroup of children who entered the trial with the weakest self-regulation skills. Letter-word identification gains appeared across the full sample.
Why this matters for FCD: Self-regulation is the cornerstone of school readiness, and the Tominey trial is one of several pilots suggesting it may be trainable through guided play with a low-cost protocol that any preschool or family could run. The trial’s clearest gains were for children who entered with the weakest baseline self-regulation -- exactly the kids the system is most likely to label as behavior problems. The intervention treated the substrate, not the behavior. That is the FCD frame in one small trial, with the caveat that the main effect did not reach significance.
What it doesn’t answer: Whether the gains hold once the intervention stops. The follow-up windows in this trial were short. Sustained or refreshed practice is probably needed for sustained gains.
