"He just can't sit still."
Listen to what that sentence assumes. It assumes sitting still is a decision, available to any child who wants it badly enough, and withheld by this one out of defiance or immaturity. So, we respond the way you respond to a decision. We redirect, remind, consequence, repeat. Try harder to focus. Stop wiggling. Keep your hands to yourself.
Sitting still is a physical achievement not a decision. A body holds still the way a gymnast holds a handstand -- a thousand tiny corrections a minute, run by systems that only develop through use. Balance. Body position sense. Core strength. The vestibular machinery of the inner ear that tells a brain where it's in space. You build those systems by moving -- spinning, hanging, climbing, rolling down hills, carrying heavy things. Take the movement away and the systems stay unfinished (or atrophy), and an unfinished system does what unfinished systems do. It wobbles. It fidgets. It gets up and walks around, not to defy you, but because the body is still asking for the input it needs.
Stillness is a movement skill. The wiggling isn't the opposite of concentration. It's the backup generator kicking in. Often, it's what concentration requires of a body that hasn't been given enough movement to concentrate any other way.
What the trials keep finding
The movement-to-thinking connection is one of the better-tested claims in child development.
A randomized trial gave elementary schoolers a daily after-school hour of aerobic play for a school year and measured attention, executive function (the brain's capacity to focus, hold information, and control impulses), and the brain activity underneath them. The group that played improved across the board including brain measures not just behavior. A meta-analysis of 36 studies across 15 countries found consistent gains in inhibition and working memory, with the strongest effects when the movement was cognitively rich, in other words, games with rules and decisions not just run laps around the playground (an important caveat on this at the end of this post). A 36-week trial in more than 400 children found something even better. Across three very different activity types, the kids whose bodies got better at moving were the same kids whose brains got better at thinking, over the same nine months. Queue Aristotle, body and brain are not two projects. How many more thousands of years will it take us to see it plainly?
These effects are real, but they don't impact everything at the same levels. For example, one executive function skill (flexible switching between tasks) barely moves, and it hasn't been shown that the benefits persist long after the movement stops. That may mean movement is something we should do frequently and persistently. So, movement isn't a miracle, but it's clearly infrastructure. The healthier the infrastructure is, the smoother the ride.
The part we keep getting backwards
Compare what the evidence suggests we should do against how we typically react at home and elsewhere.
A child fidgets through math and so...he loses recess? A school's test scores dip and so...we trade PE minutes for an all-school assembly and more test prep. The kid who most needs to move is the one whose movement options get confiscated first. Why? Because we insist on categorizing movement as reward and stillness as work or productivity. And despite claiming to be "data-driven," the school that cuts recess to raise scores is removing one of the few interventions shown to build the capabilities the scores measure. Accountability driven optimization at its inglorious finest. (For another day: stillness as part of an age-appropriate mindfulness program is something different.)
ICYMI: recess and PE minutes are set by budgets and policy, they get cut hardest in the schools serving the kids carrying the most load, and none of that is a parenting failure or a teacher's choice. Teachers are handed a classroom of human beings and told to produce stillness without the fuel stillness runs on. The accountability sits with the people who design the school day. What's yours is smaller and closer to home -- the hours you do control, and the story you tell about the wiggling.

Gabriele here with insights from the clinical lens.
Some kids are movement hungry. The sensory-seeking kid, the ADHD-wired kid, the one who's all elbows and momentum. For that kid, big movement before demands is often the single highest yield move a family can make, and the research agrees. Vigorous activity is one of the best non-pharma supports we can use to generate and sustain attention. Some kids are the opposite. The sensory-sensitive kid can be tipped over by the same spinning and roughhousing that settles her brother. Same input, opposite effect. And for many autistic kids, predictable movement (swimming laps, trampoline routines, the same hike every time) regulates, while chaotic competitive play dysregulates.
So, the takeaway isn't "add movement, any movement, in any amount." Instead, read the body in front of you. After movement, does your kid settle, are they more present, more able or are they more wired, overwhelmed, further away? Their nervous system will tell you the dose. A body that can't yet do stillness isn't broken or defiant. It's under-supplied. Different wiring, different supply lines. That's context to work with, not a flaw to fix.
Try This
The Movement Floor
For the next two weeks, build a movement floor under your kid's day: a protected daily minimum of 30 to 60 minutes of real movement, treated like sleep, not like dessert. It doesn't need equipment or a program. Walking to school counts. Playground, bikes, tree climbing, carrying groceries, wrestling with the dog.
Two placement rules. First, sequence movement before the high-demand blocks: before homework, before the long car ride, before the restaurant. You're fueling the stillness you're about to ask for. Second, never take the floor away as a consequence. The day your kid loses recess is the day he needed it most.
Then watch. Most families find that the twenty minutes "lost" to movement buys back more than twenty in homework friction, dinner-table meltdowns, and bedtime resistance. Write down what you notice at the end of each week. Fourteen days of your own data will hold this habit in place better than anything we say.
Consider This
When your child is wiggling, what story do you tell about it in that moment and who taught you that story?
Many of us inherited this story (perhaps someone once used the still=good equation to assess us?). If the wiggle is actually the body doing its job, feeding an under-supplied system so the mind can stay on task, then the story, not the child, is what needs correcting. There's no verdict in this question. Just notice, next time, whether you're watching defiance or watching maintenance.
