We’re Victor and Gabriele. Victor spent most of his career as an investor and operating executive across biotech, government, and tech. Gabriele is a speech-language pathologist and parent coach. More relevantly, we’ve spent 24 years raising two kids who are now young adults.
Along the way we kept running into the same gap. Developmental science knows an enormous amount about what children need to thrive. Almost none of it reaches parents in a form they can actually use. What does reach parents is reactive: wait for a milestone to be missed, a behavior to become a problem, a diagnosis to arrive. Then scramble.
We built Functional Child Development because we wanted the other version. The proactive one. The one that starts with a different question: what conditions does a child need to flourish, and which of those conditions can we build, protect, or restore right now?
FCD organizes developmental science around five systems: Connection (Safe, Seen, Loved), Regulation (Sleep, Fuel, Senses, Move, Feelings), Play and Exploration (How kids learn), Identity and Purpose (I am, I matter), and Resources and Demands (Family, community, environment).
These aren’t aspirational categories. They’re the conditions that either hold or they don’t. When they hold, kids build the capacity to thrive in a world that keeps changing. When they don’t, behavior tells you exactly where the gap is, if you know how to read it.
This newsletter is where we share the framework as it develops. The science behind each pillar. The practical moves that translate research into something you can try this week. The hard-won lessons from our own family. And honest conversation about where the evidence is strong, where it’s thin, and where parenting will always require judgment over certainty.
