A research team followed 117 families through a full year of foster placement. Every day, the foster parents reported how stressed they were. Every day, the children’s saliva was sampled for cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.
The finding that the parents’ and children’s stress profiles correlated was not the surprise. Foster care is stressful for everyone involved, and families living together tend to synchronize across a lot of dimensions. The interesting question was which way the stress ran over time.
The cleaner pathway ran in one direction. How stressed a parent was on Tuesday predicted how elevated the child’s cortisol was on Wednesday. The reverse -- how stressed the child was on one day predicting the parent’s state the next -- was substantially weaker. The cascade moved downstream, from parent to child. Not the other way.
That finding has been extended and refined in the years since. The basic shape holds: a parent’s stress is upstream of a child’s stress in ways that are physiological, measurable, and time-lagged by roughly a day. Not in a soft general sense. In the sample-the-saliva, show-up-in-cortisol-tomorrow sense.
The easy read of this finding is guilt. We want to try something different.
Your nervous system is built to do this.
What that day-lag pattern is capturing is one of the core mechanisms of early development: a child’s immature nervous system borrows the regulatory capacity of the adults around them until it can hold its own. The technical term for this is co-regulation. The lived word is presence. You’re not failing if your child needs you to be present and help them co-regulate. That’s actually how an immature nervous system gets to maturity.
Human infants are born more neurologically incomplete than the young of almost any other species. They cannot regulate their own temperature, their own feeding, their own sleep cycles, or their own arousal states without external support. Gradually, across years of interaction with regulating adults, they build the internal capacity to do more of that themselves. But the building process depends entirely on having something to borrow against. A child whose closest adults are chronically dysregulated is trying to build internal regulation while borrowing from a system that itself has nothing to lend.
This is not metaphor. A body of work on early brain development, running across studies of face-to-face interaction, physiological synchrony between parents and infants, and the aftermath of disrupted early connection, shows that the regulatory capacity is built relationally before it is built internally. The parent’s system is not just modeling calm. It is, in a direct neurobiological sense, doing some of the regulation work until the child’s system can take it over.
Which means: the first parenting move is regulating yourself. Not as a luxury between the things that count. As the move that all the other moves depend on.
There is an intervention designed around exactly this logic.
The Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care program for preschoolers was built for one of the highest-stress parenting contexts there is: families who take in foster children with histories of early adversity and trauma. The children in these placements tend to arrive with elevated cortisol baselines and significant dysregulation. The foster parents, caring for children they did not raise from birth, often without the biological bonding timeline that eases attachment, are carrying substantial stress of their own.
The program worked, not by training foster parents on behavior-management technique first. It worked by reducing the foster parents’ stress first, through parent training, structured routines, and case management support that lowered the load on the adults. When the parents’ state stabilized, the day-lag cascade went down. The children’s cortisol profiles improved. The mechanism ran the way the data said it would.
This matters for what it says about cause and effect. The cascade is not destiny. It is a mechanism, and mechanisms are changeable. A parent’s nervous system is the active ingredient, the one that can be supported, and the one that changes things downstream when it is.
One honest caveat: this intervention was designed for extreme circumstances, with resources that are not available in ordinary parenting life. The principle generalizes, but the specific program design does not. What the study demonstrates is not a script you can replicate at home; it is confirmation that when you support the adult’s nervous system, the child’s follows. That logic applies well beyond foster care.
We think about this as a four-step sequence, and it has become the organizing logic of a lot of what we write here.
Stabilize the state. Lower the load. Reconnect. Then teach.
The order matters, and the science above explains why.
Stabilize the state first, because until your nervous system is available, your child cannot borrow anything from it. A parent trying to coach or correct a child from inside their own fight-or-flight mode is not operating from the part of the brain that does coaching or correction well. And the child’s system is tracking the parent’s state, not just the parent’s words.
Lower the load second, because a nervous system under excessive demand cannot perform even when it wants to. The demands are real, they are often structural, and naming them is not complaint. It is diagnosis. A parent at the edge of their capacity cannot stabilize a child’s nervous system the way a parent with some wiggle room can.
Reconnect third, because instruction delivered in the absence of connection tends not to land. The child’s system is not in a receptive state when the relationship channel is disrupted. Repair the channel first. Then the information has somewhere to go.
Teach fourth -- only then. This is how learning works. A child who is dysregulated, overloaded, and disconnected from the adult in front of them is not in a state to receive and retain new information. Wait for the window. The window exists. Teaching into the right window is simply more efficient than teaching into the wrong one.
We want to say something directly about the guilt question before we close.
The day-lag finding can sound like a sentence: your stress becomes your child’s biology. That framing is technically accurate and practically paralyzing. It implies that a parent who is anxious, depleted, or struggling is doing damage with every stressed day, and the only remedy is to be less stressed, which is not an option most parents have readily available.
The reframe we find more honest and more useful is this: your nervous system is the resource. Start there.
There’s one more thing we have learned, after many years of parenting together. The regulator is not a fixed role. Some days one of you carries it. Some days you receive it.
Which means: the most regulating thing you can do for your child this week may be putting yourself to bed a bit earlier. Or having a conversation that clears the thing you’ve been thinking about since Monday. Or asking your partner to carry something you have been carrying alone.
Nervous systems do not care about virtue points, and the science does not award credit for pushing through. It tracks state. And state can be supported.
Try This
One day this week, before you react to your child’s escalation, name your own state out loud to yourself, or to your partner if they are nearby. “I am on four hours of sleep and there is an unfinished thing from work sitting in my chest.” Notice whether the naming changes the next thirty seconds.
