Why “Functional”?
A few years ago, approaching 50, Victor went looking for what “healthy” actually meant. What he found was that healthcare was really sick care: a system designed to ignore you until something broke. Functional Medicine offered a different premise. Don’t wait for the diagnosis. Build the conditions for health on purpose.
As parents and professionals who’ve spent careers in child development, education, and speech-language pathology, we recognized the same pattern. The way most people think about raising kids is reactive. You wait for a milestone to be missed, a behavior to become a problem, a diagnosis to arrive. Then you scramble.
Functional Child Development starts from the other direction. What do children actually need to develop well? Not in theory. In practice, in your home, starting tonight.
What FCD is
FCD is a framework built on developmental science, organized around five pillars:
Connection (Safe, Seen, Loved), Regulation (Sleep, Fuel, Senses, Move, Feelings), Play and Exploration (How kids learn), Identity and Purpose (I am, I matter), and Resources and Demands (Family, community, environment).
These aren’t aspirational categories. They’re the conditions that either hold or they don’t. When they hold, kids build the capacity to thrive in a world that keeps changing. When they don’t, behavior tells you exactly where the gap is, if you know how to read it.

Who we are
We’re Victor Reinoso and Gabriele Nicolet. We’ve been together more than thirty years, and we’ve raised two phenomenal young adults. That part is not incidental. The framework you’ll read here is the one we built and tested at our own dinner table, in real conversations with our kids about what was working and what wasn’t, long before we wrote a word about it.
Gabriele is a licensed speech-language pathologist and parent coach who has spent two decades working with families navigating complex developmental challenges. She hosts the Complicated Kids Podcast and has built a clinical practice translating developmental science into what actually lands at home. Her hands-on work with families is the ground truth that keeps FCD honest about what works in real kitchens with real kids.
Victor’s background is in education policy, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and nonprofit leadership. He’s currently an Entrepreneur in Residence at Learner Studio. He brings the research and the frameworks; Gabriele brings the clinical observations and the lived application. FCD is the conversation between those two ways of knowing.
It grew out of everything we got right, everything we got wrong, and the gap between what developmental science knows and what actually reaches parents. We built this framework because we needed it ourselves, and because we believe the knowledge shouldn’t stay locked in journals and clinics.
What you’ll get
This publication is where we share the framework as it develops: the science behind each pillar, the practical moves that translate research into something you can try this week, the hard-won lessons from our own family, and honest conversation about where the evidence is strong, where it’s thin, and where parenting will always require judgment over certainty.
We write for parents first. But educators, pediatricians, therapists, and anyone who works with kids will find their way in.
